MEDICAL SPOTLIGHT - Mr. Magoo
How sad to be a senior dog sitting in a shelter waiting for your forever home. Passed over again and again for younger kennel-mates. That’s why we put 8 year old Mr. Magoo through our Senior Animal Wellness Program.
Our Senior Wellness pets go through diagnostic testing through VCA Animal Hospital. Often this is the first time these dogs will have even gone to the vet so a complete workup is vital to pinpoint any underlying disease or chronic health issues. Each dog receives a complete bloodwork panel including heartworm testing and parasite screening. Further testing include stool and urinalysis checks.
What we found out was that Mr. Magoo had been suffering with tick fever. He hadn't shown any symptoms of illness prior to this, so we were glad we were able to catch this in time. What we found out next shocked us all...
His x-rays showed that he had been shot several times as evidenced by the pellets that were embedded just under his skin. They appeared to be old injuries. We were shocked at the cruelty and could not believe that someone could have hurt this poor, sweet dog who wanted nothing but to be loved.
Mr. Magoo's next step was to be treated with a few weeks of antibiotics to help combat his tick fever. After that, we could tackle his next issue: his horrible teeth!
Unfortunately, we knew that the majority of Mr. Magoo's teeth were in a state of advanced periodontal disease. This led to having to pull the majority of the diseased teeth, including one that needed a root canal. Magoo was left with approximately 8 teeth. You can imagine how much pain he must have been in!

With all of this now behind him, Magoo is now living the good life with adopters that were thrilled to have such a wonderful dog join their family. They report to us that he is an "awesome dog" and that he will be "spoiled for the rest of his life". We know that without the help of our Senior Animal Wellness Program, Mr. Magoo may have lingered at the shelter for much longer with undiagnosed tick fever and painful teeth and gums. This is why the Senior Animal Wellness Program is such an important part of what we do!
